Playing games with your mind

A very interesting new device is about to hit the market, something that will allow people to interact with a game or computer without mouse, keyboard, or controller...

Okay, okay, so the whole thing seems like a bit of a pie-in-the-sky pipe-dream, but it's interesting as a future possibility. Basically, a company called Emotiv has created something called the EPOC, which is a headset with sensors that pick up facial movements, emotions, and thoughts, and allows you to control certain applications without the use of a keyboard or mouse. Pretty impressive, eh? They've got their own software to help you use the EPOC in lieu of a keyboard, by translating movements or thoughts into certain key-commands or combinations.

Basically, this seems like a very expensive, and largely useless, toy. It's hard to imagine this being used for gaming, or even general computer use. Whilst it would be awesome to have certain abilities in games triggered by thought, eliminating issues like not enough hot-bar space - yes I'm referring to you, Dragon Age - this gadget seems to... how do I put this... be sold as a lot more than it really is.

During one of the demos, they show that emotion can effect colour and music... I'm sorry, but if I'm upset by my game, frustrated at a particularly difficult encounter for instance, the last bloody thing I want is my gamma brought so far down that not only am I fighting for my life, I'm fighting to see. Of course, this would make me angry, which would probably cause a grand crescendo in the music, just the thing a frustrated, gamma blinded, angry gamer needs! See my dripping sarcasm there? That's inhibited by my choice to keep this blog profanity free; keep that in mind.

Another demo showed someone using blinks and smiles set up to turn a little side-module, a laser. What if you just wanted to blink, or something made you smile? This who apparatus seems fraught with issue after issue, and apart from a few neat tricks, seems completely useless, and most assuredly not worth the US$299 that it's retailing at, though of course you have to buy online from the Emotiv sight, too.

A great RPG

It's a great thing when you find a really good RPG, and Dragon Age: Origins is exactly that.

During the lead up to this game, I was trepidatious, I thought, I don't want to get too into the idea of this game and be disappointed by it, but after playing it, I'm hooked, and all my fears have been put to rest.

Okay where to start... character creation is pretty good, it's not the most in-depth I've used, but it's a damn sight better than many out there. The character models can be made to look pretty good, though the elves take a bit of work to get to look anything other than horrid. The dwarves look awesome, too. I've played through the human noble intro, and both the dwarven noble and commoner intros, and they are both quite good, too. I've gotten a moderate way into the game, and it's really very fun.

I've noticed a few of the voice actors from Baldur's Gate II in this game, and that's honestly what this game reminds me of. It's like the Baldur's Gate II of modern gaming, and I'm thoroughly happy and impressed by that. This is a game where the storyline is one that you actually care about, and the level of detail in history and back-story is just fantastic. Along the way you will get many a 'codex' which are the medium through which you learn about the history of the families, lands, and religion, of the people you're fighting to save from an evil horde of 'Darkspawn'. The game is very, very bloody, but there's also a sense of humour to it so it isn't too dark, but this is certainly not a game for children.

So far I've preferred going a noble human, and my normal party consists of my Mabari War Hound, a very large, aggressive, yet lovable dog, Alistair, and Leliana. This is working at the moment, though I'm not adverse to shifting party members around when needed.

The game runs smoothly, and has crashed on me three times in a week, which for a newly released game that's alright. The voice acting is actually very good, with some big names in there, such as Kate Mulgrew and Tim Curry.

All in all, I'm very impressed with the game. It plays well, reads well, sounds good, looks good, and above all, is really very, very enjoyable! My SO hasn't been playing it herself, but has really enjoyed watching it whilst I play. She's going to play it as an elven mage, so that should be good to watch, too. She wants me to play as much as I like to play, because it's enjoyable to view, too.

I think that's enough for now, but suffice to say, if you play RPGs at all, and you've an alright PC, an XBOX 360, or a PS3, pick up this game! I downloaded mine off Steam and it's been very good that way, and you pay less overhead, too, which is nice.

Gaming through sickness

During the last... Oh, I don't know, three weeks of sickness, is it three weeks, or four? Anyway, during that time I've still found the energy to play a great new RPG.

Before I go into any of the gaming stuff, in fact, that will get it’s own post next up, as I think it ought to get more than a one paragraph mention! So this entry into my neglected blog shall be a re-cap of what has been going on…

Let’s see, let’s see. Well the weather has obviously been turning cooler and cooler outside, though to be honest I’ve not gone outside for weeks. October is sort of a mucousy haze which is hard to recall with any clarity. H1N1 hit me, I started to get over it, and as you can see from the quietness spreading over my blog once again, I was pushing to get well too soon, and ended up back in bed for four days straight. I’m usually a very healthy person, I rarely get sick and when I do I get over it very quickly, so it was really very shocking to be hit so hard by this swine flu thing.

I’ve done little actual work for the past I don’t know how long, but I’d been working so much up to that point that I’m not really behind all that much, and my bosses are all very understanding of my illness and really don’t want me to push it and end up not working till the new year or something drastic.

I’ve not been paying attention to much of anything outside of my house. It’s fun! I’m like a hermit! All the things I usually keep tabs on, upcoming games, what's happening with mortgage news, finance markets and all that. I peered down my street today when I ventured outside to pick up my post – first time I’ve been outside in a very long time – and I noticed that not just one of the houses on my street are selling, but three homes have sale of house signs up! Wow, the market might be looking up? I don’t know.

Anyway, I’m going to go onto a fresh new post so I can talk about an awesome new game I’ve been playing.

Sickness and old injuries

I didn't realise just how much being sick can  resurrect old injuries...

Earlier this year I was involved in a small car accident – I’m sure I’ve written about this multiple times – and I had mild whiplash symptoms and back pain... and I couldn't turn my head for a little while... okay, they weren’t that mild, but anyway, that neck stiffness and the back pain has really bothered me during the worst of the flu, and I was surprised at that. I suppose I’ll have to go back to physical therapy for a while, to make sure everything really is back in order, but my insurance company will cover that, so it’s okay, except that I don’t really have the time, but I suppose I’ll just have to find it.

I’ve also found that my good ol’ familiar friend, ‘gaming wrist’ as I like to call it is back with a vengeance. This is the unavoidable consequence of hours spent on the computer for work, and then also for gaming. I’m back to wearing my wrist guards, which help, and I think I’m going to have to go out and get a wrist rest at some point… or ask my SO to because she has kept me in the house and resting for the last two weeks and with the weather getting the way it is I can’t see her letting me out for a while yet.

Generally I’m feeling incredibly old, and before this flu hit me I was feeling pretty good, actually. I had that nice feeling of health, you know, but now I just feel old and dried up and a little brittle. It’s not a good feeling, and I’m looking forward to feeling much more myself in the coming weeks. I’ve spoken to others who’ve had the virus, and it varies greatly as to how long it takes you to get back on your feet. I just hope that this isn’t a precursor of flu viruses in the future!

Filming for Game of Thrones pilot

The pilot is being filmed, and I've concerns about it all, but still looking forward to it.

Okay, to explain where I'm coming from... If you've seen Rome, which is sort of an equivalent to this series in terms of production values, and the production group - HBO - but I have to say that many of the actors are of a much better calibre than Rome, anyway, back to my point. If you've seen Rome, you'll know what I mean when I say there are moments of complete cringing. It could be a line in the dialogue here, or a gesture there, but sometimes you are ripped so forcibly from your tentatively shallow level of immersion that all of a sudden you realise you're watching a bunch of guys prancing about in little dresses, taking themselves very seriously...

It's not like that all the time, and I think Deadwood didn't quite have this going so much as Rome - again, made by same group, HBO - but I'm still very highly aware of the fact that that just because these are great books, doesn't mean they'll make a great TV series... Can you imagine watching some of the stuff that happens in that book in the form of a TV show? I'm concerned I'm going to feel like I'm watching a school play the whole time. The seriousness of whether or not Jon will be allowed to go and join the Night's Watch or not... yeah, goodness me I hope all the actors really do this well, and that the sets work and everything.

So far all the filming has been completed in Scotland, at Doune Castle in Scotland to be precise, which is where they shot all the scenes that took place in the courtyard of Winterfell. Next they move onto Paint Hall Studio in Belfast which is where everything will be shot, except the stuff that's supposed to be happening in Pentos and all that, which is being shot in Morocco.

So yeah, I respect many of the actors involved in this, but still feel like I'll be wearing a grimace throughout the entirety of the first episode.

My last post reminded me

Of something else I've been meaning to write about...

I’ve noticed a growing trend, maybe it’s due to getting closer to the holiday season and what not, but I’ve noticed more and more emails in my Inbox which are little more than spam… no wait, they are spam, but they are spam from companies that I am already affiliated with in some way, or have purchased from in the past, or have some sort of rewards card with or something like that. In some cases the promoted items or services aren’t from companies I’ve dealt with directly, but more a cross-promotion sort of thing.

As with BT - they are notably bad with this, I don’t actually have a phone line with them anymore, but I did a few years ago, and I’m still getting spammy messages from them about upcoming deals on BT home phones. Presumably if I liked the business, I would have stayed with the business, so if I don’t use their services anymore, shouldn’t I not have to put up with them? It’s not just them, either, telecoms companies are pretty annoying with the whole spamming thing, probably because there’s so much competition in the field. I’m happy with my provider at the moment, so no, I don’t want your telephone system, I like mine, thank you!

It’s the same with internet connections, whether they are broadband, ADSL, or SDSL, the company always thinks that they can trick you into upgrading to a more expensive package. Its sort of insulting, I mean, I’m on a very high downloads per month package as it is, and I don’t go anywhere near my limit most months, so why would they send me emails on an almost weekly basis trying to get me to upgrade.

And yet, one of the most frustrating aspects about all of this is that to get off these mailing lists you have to follow link after link, and they are always tucked in the most out of the way parts of the emails or webpages that you go to, and you often find that they’ve sneakily altered the usual button set-ups, so you have to click on the left button, which is normally the ‘Cancel’ button. Anyway, that’s enough out of me for now, on this topic anyway.

Back and removing spam

I've been left with the hateful task of removing all the built up spam.

It's insane how much of it can build up in just two weeks! I have to say, it makes me so damn frustrated with the idiots who spam my blog, even though I know they are only doing it because they are paid to, and okay, sure, things are tough for a lot of people at the moment, but come on, stop spamming everyone! To those who pay people to spam blogs like mine, you are so petty, your advertising methods are pathetic, and you aren't going to sell your stinking prescription drugs and so on.

Gahhhh! I've not got a lot of energy in me at the moment, so to have to deal with all this spam is all the more irritating. I'm not just complaining over nothing, I've got over 200 spam comments to go through... that's an insane amount of spam, and now they are getting more stupid. They are these really dumb jokes with the links to drugs or crap just stuck at the bottom. For instance, and this is the latest spam comment I've gotten rid of as spam - there's about ten pages to go through, so I'm doing a little at a time - and this is a quote... "Fresh joke! What weighs 909 kg (2,000 pounds for all of you inefficient, non-metric “people”) and is bare to the bone? A skeleTON!!!"

Oh my goodness. Not only do I have to go and delete all this crap, I'm now subjected to some of the stupidest jokes I've ever heard. The only way these jokes could be anything less than crap is if they were told to you by a child still in single digits. They have a right to silly jokes, it's like their territory, but to have spammers leaving this stuff there is just... just too much.

Usually I feel the need to be somewhat polite to these people, to be appreciative of the fact that they probably only do this job because they've not been able to get something better paying, but I'm sick and that gives me the right to be a grouchy... So... spammers, get the effing hell off of my blog!

You lose, H1N1

I am now getting over H1N1, the worst flu of my life.

So, after nearly two weeks of nothing happening on my blog, it should start to come back to life over the coming weeks, and then things should be as they were. It's been a horrid two weeks, the only saving grace has been the constant love and attention from my SO; she nursed me through the whole thing. It's been grand to have her take care of me, and I really appreciate her for it.

I've never before felt so lethargic in my life, I was sleeping away most of the day, and when I was awake, it wasn't a very nice experience. This virus really knocked the wind out of my sails, I still feel very weak and I know it's going to be a few more weeks before I feel like my old self.

My work has been very understanding, which has been nice. I think everyone is just so concerned when they hear you've got this thing that's been blaring on the news for the last three months, and I have to say, it does pull you up short when you realise you've got it... I knew it was out there, but really thought I was healthy enough that I wouldn't get sick. I suppose you can't tell with these things sometimes.

As I said, I'm on the mend now, and I'm hoping to keep my blog much more up to date with everything that I usually write on. I've missed my daily rant, you know. Well, it's not always a rant, sometimes it's a ramble, it's what it is, and I don't feel the need in my current state to delve too deeply into what exactly my blog is 'about', because in the harsh light of sickness, it seems altogether random, perhaps it's like Seinfeld in it's 'about nothing' but 'about everything' kind of approach... anyway, more later!

Free office supplies for me!

Ahh, how nice! Seriously, my work is giving them to me to keep me working as well as I have been. Oh yeah, nice to be appreciated, eh?

Okay so yeah, I’ve been putting in mammoth hours for work in the last few weeks, leaving me with little time for anything but sleep and hanging out with my SO when I get the chance.

Because of this, my work emailed me with a huge list of office equipment and told me to pick what I needed – within reason – to continue doing so well and what not. Well, I set to it and started in on what I would like to add to my home set up. Computers aren’t any issue, because I’ve got an amazing set up already, but I liked the idea of better fax machines to replce my very old one and a new set of nifty cordless phones.

I sent off my request back to work to see what they say. Considering how giving they wanted to be, and what I actually asked for, I believe I’ll get my new fax and phone set in the not too distant future.

It’s certainly been gruelling of late, and I look forward to a few weeks at a more relaxed pace. I was in a taxi today and heard an ad on the radio for a company building websites, and I felt so like cringing as I sat there. To hear the way that people would say to promote the line of work I myself am in was sort of… well it was horrible. It’s like hearing how your mum talks about you to her friends, like you cured cancer and were the first man to step foot on Mars.

The company had rather exorbitant rates, which made me feel better, because anyone who looks into current prices on website building would find in short order that what this business was charging was on the far end and for not an altogether stellar package.

The hiring of games

Is something I refuse to do, so in spite of finding Mini Ninjas to be mildy interesting, I shall not ever play it.

Basically, I won't pay for a game that I don't think I'm going to get a good amount of play time from or isn't a very good game. I don't like to have anything approaching chaff in my collection, and a game that's overly short, overly easy - is actually aimed predominantly at children, but has same effect - and only got an 8.0 from IGN, unfortunately approaches chaff. I know it's not a bad game, but to me, the comments lead me to believe it's a so-so game.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that, if you were going to hire it. But I won't do that. Want to know why? In the past I've hired DVDs and games, and I've seen what they look like. The scratches, fingerprints, and general grime on these things is utterly revolting. I would rather stamp on my own foot that put one of those disgusting discs in my PS3, or any console or player in my home.

Because in the past, before I was like this, I would try it. I would hire games and DVDs and try them, only to find they didn't work. That was infuriating, but then to go back and have them ask you stupid questions - "did you put the disc in with the shiny side down?" - and in any way attempt to blame you for their piece of crap disgusting disc not working is more than this irate gamer can take.

I've often found that it's best to just avoid these sorts of situations, but it is frustrating, because it would be nice to be able to try a game that you wanted to play for a few hours, but didn't want to all out buy, but ah well. I'd rather miss out on a little game than go through the ordeal that is the hiring process.

The hirsute zombie

I've been playing Plants Vs. Zombies again, and now they have become quite hirsute... yes, they now have moustaches.

I've made my way through the entire game, once, and have also completed all the puzzles and all the mini games. They have all been rather fun, though some are more difficult than others, but I'm actually finding that I'm still enjoying the game just as much. There's a little Zen garden that you get towards the end of the game, and I'm having a great time using it to get more in-game money to then buy either more stuff for the Zen garden, or grow my big Tree of Wisdom thing. Oh, and buy Stinky the Snail, who helps pick up all the in-game money you get in the Zen Garden. He also likes chocolate.

From this Tree of Wisdom I have learned a couple of things. Two of these pearls of wisdom have given me a laugh when I went back in to kill a horde of the undead. One thing the tree told me was that I could see Zombies from the future, if I simply typed the word 'future' in when I was playing. I did so, and sure enough, I've got zombies from the future. Funnily enough, the only differentiation is that Zombies from the future wear rather ugly, '80s looking sunglasses. Apart from that, they are exactly the same. Now, the tree also told me to see an horrific transformation in the zombies, if I simply typed 'moustache' in when I was playing. I did so, and now my zombies have an array of moustachios. You can even get them to be zombies from the future <em>with</em> moustachios!

I've not completed growing the Tree of Wisdom, because quite frankly, that sucker bleeds you! But I'm still playing, still going through my second run through of the game and knocking down the Survival modes. I want the gold trophy, rather than the silver I've currently got. I don't usually get like this about games, but something about this game is sort of addictive, I think.

Hang on, how many comments?

I was about to write a new post here, and I happened to check my comments, and my eyes nearly goggled at how many there were, and how long it would take to delete them with Blogr's super slow reaction times.

A new record… 119 spam posts all waiting for me to Approve, Spam, Delete, Edit, Quick Edit, or Reply… Yeah, I think I know what I’ll do there. I always mark it all as spam, and then usually I delete it all, but now I’m thinking of leaving it there for a month and seeing how many spam comments I have sitting there!

I was going to write more about mortgage market news, and what it’s up to. You know, current prices on mortgage deals and so on. Something that did surprise me was the move back towards the more ‘high risk’ mortgages, as in the bad credit mortgage loans and whatnot. I pretty much hate the whole ‘credit’ industry. It’s been a shockingly good way for a few to make money, and a great many to bleed money out their you-know-what. That’s why there are so damn many of those cash for home businesses, and that’s a sad thing, if you ask me.

Spam and mortgages… seems to go together in a way. Constant source of irritation and stress, and the best news you can get about it is that it’s over! The sad thing is that all this spam is unavoidable, there are so many blog posts out there about hatred of spam, or the unfortunate amount of cheap labour employed overseas to spam WordPress blogs. There are a few ways of fighting it, but when you just want to jump on your blog and blog, well, you don’t really want to go through too much to actually get to why you were there in the first place.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. All you Russian spammers, I’m sincerely hoping you get a better job soon. I know what you do much suck, suck pretty bad, and I bet you get paid a pittance for it, too, and really, it’s not your fault so much as the moron who hired you to spam WordPress blogs with links to their stupid website that sells pharmaceuticals illegally. So, to all those spamming my blog, I wish you better luck with your next job! :)

Looking forward to Winter

I know it's early to be saying that, but it's true nonetheless.

I know it’s still Autumn, and early Autumn at that, but I couldn’t help but smell that certain cold on the wind today that means Winter is on it’s way. It’s a certain icy cleanness, very fresh, almost smelling of nothing. Autumn is a lovely season, too, but I really do prefer Winter… especially after it’s started snowing!

In spite of seeing snow for my entire life, I always find it a little magical when those soft flakes start to fall from the sky. I love seeing how everything looks once it’s been snowed on for a while, to see an entire landscape blanketed like that, it’s breathtaking.

I’ve a friend who hates Winter. He plans holidays around the time of year when Winter hits hardest so he can avoid the cold. It’s always baffeled me as to why he lives in the U.K. if he doesn’t like the cold… but anyway.

Today he told me of the package he bought to spend a fortnight in South America at the beginning of next year. He thinks those first few weeks of January are the coldest, but I’m not sure of that, to be honest. He’s got everything ready, months in advance, from his travel insurance to money converted into the local currency. He always goes over there with some stupid excuse as to why he should be treated like a VIP constantly. It’s rather preposterous. Last year my friend went over there only to find that the phone he so desperately needed to use was occupied, so he told the hotel manager that he needed to use the phone because he had to call his accountant. He said he was going to be buying up a huge swathes of beach front land and property for sale there in Brazil, and wanted to know if the deal had gone through. The hotel manager saw him for what he was, and from what I understand, just nodded condescendingly and told him he’d have to wait! We all thought that was bloody brilliant!

Bloody Ninjas

Well, less bloody, actually. The creators of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 have decided to reduce the blood for this new title in the series.

So, yes, I'm sort of surprised that they can say with such certainty that there is exactly 57% less blood than Ninja Gaiden II, but there you have it. There is still blood in the game, still red cuts when you hit an enemy, still blood spatters on walls and floors, but when you cut off a limb of an opponent in game no longer is there a gout of red, but instead the exact same gout... but now in blue!

It was apparently done to appeal to a broader audience, especially in Japan where violence is frowned upon. That's a hard pill to swallow, considering they are the home of the Yakuza, and have a history - right up to the first half of the last century - of being one of the most violent nations on the planet, and seem to have no qualms in completely and utterly objectifying women. Personally, I don't care for the level of gore in the previous games, but I still find it strange nonetheless that a country that loves Dead or Alive games would have issues with blatant violence.

It's a strange choice, too, to keep in some blood effects, but to alter others only in colour. Why not reduce them, or take them out, or make all the 'blood' blue? This half measure way of doing it is odd, and doesn't seem right to me.

I'm all for maturation of the medium, but I would rather it was consistent throughout the entire game, not just some randomly chosen aspects being changed whilst others left the same. It's a very strange approach, and I'm interested to see how people respond when they get their hands on the games.

So far the response out there is rather mixed. There are those like myself, who appreciate the reduced gore, but don't like the approach, and there are those who think that both those aspects are fine, and then there are those who are now really aggravated about it. Those people I don't understand at all!

Well, we'll find out soon enough how it all goes, the game ships to us Brits at the beginning of October.

Cryptozoology is interesting

Even if it is bunkam! But it is, really, interesting, that is. Because even if this stuff is completely made up, it's interesting to think where it all came from.

I can't remember exactly when I first became interested in cryptids, but I know I have been for some time. I love looking at the folklore stories, and how people still believe in these creatures today. Some of them seem more plausible than others, I'll grant you that, and some are real unexplained phenomena, like the Bloop.

The Bloop is one of my current favourite cryptids, because there is actual evidence backing it up. We've got the 'what' in this case, but not the 'how' or 'who'. You see, The Bloop is the name given to a sound picked up a few times by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who use equipment that was originally designed to keep tabs on that part of the ocean in case of Soviet Subs. They aren't listening for subs, anymore, and are instead using the equipment to evaluate marine health, oceanic weather, and general atmospheric conditions out there.

They've often picked up strange and - in my opinion - ominous sounds, most of which can be explained by ocean currents, volcanic activity , or the movement of Antarctic ice, but The Bloop doesn't conform to any of these. It's the odd sound out.

The Bloop's sound profile suggests that it comes from a living organism. The sound was heard on multiple underwater listening devices, called hydrophones, about 5,000kms apart. Even a Blue Whale can't manage that, the creature creating The Bloop would have to be much, much bigger.

Some people have speculated that a Giant Squid could be behind the sound, however that's extremely unlikely because, according to Phil Lobel, a marine biologist at Boston University in Massachusetts, US they don't have the giant gas filled sac that would be necessary for such a noise. He says it's impossible to be certain at this point, because no Giant Squid has ever been caught alive, though Whales have been seen with tentacle ring marks on their bodies, but he believes it's not the sound of the giant cephalopod.

Anyway, that's a mystery I hope to see solved one day.

New Uncharted game

It's the sequal to a very good game, from what I've heard, but I've not had a chance to play it yet, but this review makes me want to.

When I was looking into whether or not purchasing a PS3 would be a good idea for me, personally, I found the first Uncharted game touted as being among the best on the system. I looked up videos and reviews and thought that it looked like a really great game, it's on my list of games to get.

I was perusing IGN as I normally do, and then noticed that in the few minutes I'd been on the site, the Uncharted 2 review had gone up. I eagerly clicked on the link to the video review, and watched on rather happily, finding the game was even better than I'd expected.

I've yet to play it, so I can only work from the review and my impressions of what I've seen in videos, but this game does look really, really good. The graphics are mind bogglingly good, and the story looks to be a heck of a lot of fun. Seriously, trekking around the world in search of treasure? It's like being Indiana Jones but without the cliché!

The voice acting seems nicely done, and the character models move really well. The locations look to be quite varied and lots of fun, from verdant jungle to icy mountain sides, it all looks really great.

The game received a 9.5 from IGN, a fantastic score, and is currently sitting at 10 even for the reader average. That's a pretty amazing score, there, and I really hope the game is as good as they say.

My only draw back is that I'm a little disappointed by ten hours of single play. Co-op is fun, I'd like to try that, but I'm not hugely into online play, so this aspect doesn't make up for only ten hours of actual story-mode gameplay.

Nonetheless I fully intend on picking this game up, after I've picked up the first one, of course!

Visited my mother

And I actually had a good time, too, not that I don't normally, but my mother actually surprised me with something on this visit.

When my mother moved into this community earlier this year, she sold her home. This has left her with an even nicer nest egg than she already had, which I’m rather grateful for. I like to know that she is set to live in the nice community she moved into for about two decades before there’s any concern about paying for everything.

Whilst visiting her, she told me that she had gotten a stack of forms in the mail asking her to sign off on the renewal of her home insurance and her contents insurance as well. She thought this hilarious, and even applied for a building and contents home insurance quote, though I think she just meant for a home and contents insurance in one package.

Once they got around to processing her quote, they soon realised their folly, that she no longer owned a home, and politely told her she didn’t need their services anymore.

So that was that, and my little old mother seemed to think this the best prank of the year! She has an endearing sense of humour. She then told me that I must close my eyes and put out my hands. She used to do this when I was a child and she was giving me a surprise. It didn’t matter what magnitude of surprise we are talking about, from my favourite chocolate bar to a SNES game I’d been wanting, it was our routine.

Sitting at her nice little table, with it’s white lace cloth, I put my hands on the table, palms up, with my eyes closed. My SO was grinning like a Cheshire cat at me, so I had a feeling they were in cahoots. My mother placed into my hands three smooth plastic cases, and when I opened them, I found to my utmost surprise that she had bought me three PS3 games from the list I just happen to keep on my computer of games I intend to get in the future. LittleBigPlanet, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, and Metal Gear Solid 4.

I knew then that she must have asked my SO for the titles of some games I wanted, and I was just stoked to get them back and try ‘em out. My mother told me that she had decided to do something nice for me when her insurance renewal came around, because it reminded her of how much I’d helped in selling her house for her and making sure it all worked out nicely.

Ahh, isn’t it nice with the generation gap can so easily be bridged? It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it’s very refreshing.

Gollum's in Panama

Well, he was, until he ventured out of a cave and was killed by children... when I say Gollum I mean this really weird creature.

Okay so the run down is as follows. A group of teenagers where playing near a lake in Panama. There’s a waterfall and cave near this lake, and apparently this creature came out of the cave, and came up some rocks towards the teens. They felt threatened, describing the creature as standing 150cm tall, so threw rocks and used sticks to beat the creature to death. They then tossed the carcass back into the lake, and told their parents who went to have a look for themselves.

The parents found the carcass had washed up on the shore, and within a few days the body was showing signs of decomposition and having been eaten by buzzards…

Okay so now what I think of this whole thing. I think it’s a hoax. Reasons… the decomposed body sure enough looks like a sloth, but it doesn’t account for the body shown in the previous shots. First off, that decomposition looks fairly dry, yet we are talking about Panama, next to a lake… Tropical location, heading into Autumn, is not exactly going to dry the thing out. Not to mention, that’s an extreme level of decomposition for a few days, and if it had in fact been eaten by buzzards, then why was so much of the skin still in tact? No, this looks to be a sloth that has been decomposing for quite a while, in a dry place.

Now onto the freshly dead photos. This creature is supposedly three times the height of a regular sloth, which grow usually between 50 to 60cm tall. If you look at this creature, yes the hands look sloth like, but the face is too long for a sloth face, which have short faces with small pointed muzzles. Very different. The big kicker, the thing that screams fake to me about this thing…

If this creature was stoned and beaten to death, then why aren’t there any marks of such attacks upon it in the photos? Seriously, this is a major discrepancy, and all the other stuff could be explained, but that last fact is rather important. There’s no defence marks on the arms, no marks on the face, head, neck, chest, abdomen… Unless they managed to only hit the animal from behind, which seems rather unlikely considering they were throwing rocks at it because it was coming towards them.

Anyway, here’s a link to Metro’s story about it, and here's MSN's story about it.

What's with all the loan places?

Seriously, I can't believe how many there are now, and how they all stay in business.

You see, what really sparked this entire collapse was a few people in the U.S. deciding it would be a grand idea if they gave people large loans, we’re talking house loans here, with no down payment. That’s right, loaning the full 100% of the total amount for a house. This of course lead to many people being the horrible situation of having a home and a home loan, but loan repayments too hefty to keep up with. They are referred to as high-risk loans. What then happened is other financial establishment went and bought those loans from the banks and so forth who originally issued them. Now, on the books, this looks like the company has a certain amount of assets, but if the person defaults, if they can’t keep up with their payments, that company that thought they had a few hundred thousand in assets suddenly has to write that off. Completely.

This is just one of the causes of the current financial instability – which seems to be somewhat on the mend – but it was a major factor in why so many companies lost so much money in such a short amount of time.

Anyway, what bothers me is that I feel people should have learned that quick credit, fast cash, short-term loans, all have a nasty way of coming back and hurting you. I know it’s a pretty damn difficult time for most people, at the moment, but if they continue to buy into the cycle of loans, and then paying back at a minimum 20% – though you’d probably find it’s much more if you cared to check it on one of those loan calculator applications – more than they borrowed, it’s going to be very difficult to break out of.

I suppose I also feel a great sense of frustration with these loans brokers, that they are so happy to cash in, in spite of how it effects people. Bah! Anyway, if you are considering one of those short-term loans, please don’t if you can avoid it in any way!

Review not so good

Which means I'm most likely not going to be playing the game... That's just the way it is.

So yeah, don’t have as much time for gaming as I used to, which is why I haven’t been playing LOTRO so much. That’s a little sad, because I think it’s a great game, but there it is. I’m still interested in MMOs though, so when Champions Online was coming up, I thought I may drop in and give it a go.

But then I saw the review today on IGN… 7.6 from them, but the reader review average is 6.7. Now, I usually don’t play games that got under 8.5, so this means that Champions Online is completely and totally out, unless they put out an expansion that dramatically alters the score for the overall game, I won’t be playing it.

The reader reviews are really interesting, actually. They seem to swing between scores of 3.5 through to 5, which basically talk about how buggy the game is, repetitive, animations aren’t working, skills aren’t working, and powers have already been nerfed. Then you have those who are rating this game around 8 to 9 saying it’s fun, especially once you’ve a few friends to quest with.

I have to say, though, that a quick look over of the reviews with the low scores, and the reviews with the high scores, that the low score reviews are better written and more in-depth, whereas the high score reviews are a little superficial and you sort of get the impression these people would be happy playing any game.

So, from what I’ve read, this game sounds unfinished, and it really doesn’t look all that good, either. Server downtime seems to be a big issue, which I find hugely frustrating when you’re paying for a subscription.

All in all, with what the reviewer on IGN said, I’m sort of surprised they reviewed this game as highly as they did.

Simple pleasures in life

There are times when I feel staunchly that the simple pleasures in life are often the best.

Today I went out food shopping, a very annoying task, I assure you. Wandering through the super market aimlessly is not my style, so it's really annoying to be stuck halfway down an aisle behind just such a shopper. I calmly went about doing my thing, hoping this lady in front of me would hurry up, but no, it was like she was trying to win a race for being as slow as possible whilst still moving...

Anyway, by the time I got home, I was in such a foul mood, that I knew something must be done. But I didn't know what... then I found that my SO had just run me a bath, with bubbles and the whirlpool jets going already, too. I was enormously thankful, and went into the lusciously steamy bathroom and sat in the nice hot bath. When I'm doing this my SO likes to sit and hang out and talk to me, it takes the experience from really good to oh I really love, love, love, this!

It's amazing to me how something so very simple can really turn your mood around, to go from frustrated and surly to calm and pleasant in the span of half an hour is quite remarkable. When that bath is soon followed up by an extremely lovely slow-cooked stew with crusty bread, well, then I'm positively joyful.

I'm now full, warm, and pretty much ready to sleep. What a great feeling! I'm not the best sleeper, to be honest, so when I actually feel sleepy its a very pleasant experience... now to just slowly wander about locking up and turning off all the lights and I'm off to bed for a good ol' sleep. Ahhh, the good things in life!

Taking tomorrow off!

It's about time I took a full day off from work. I've not had a day off in about two weeks, and it's really wearing me down.

All my usual routines shall fall away, I’m going to spend tomorrow doing as little as possible. Lounge around in my bathrobe all day long, I really love doing taht. I feel so indolent, and I don’t often get to feel that, so that’s what tomorrow shall be for me.

Don’t expect to see a post from me, either, I’m serious about doing as little as possible. I’m going to spend much of the day gaming, because I’ve really not had the time I would have liked to fully test all my new games and wear my new PS3 in.

Right now I’m looking through the last work related stuff for the day, then off to relax until the Tuesday! I was just looking over some recent savings news before I toddled off for the beginning of my rest, because it seems like it’s a really pertinent time to be watching the markets, online expatriate savings accounts seem to be doing rather well, in spite of it’s niche market potential, as do SIPP investments, though that’s not all that surprising.

I’m really hoping that after all this financial storminess blows over, people will have learned a valuable – if hard – lesson in savings and investments. Especially in not taking on more than you can handle. That’s the saddest part, if you ask me, all those people who lost their homes to foreclosure. It’s one thing to have to tighten your belt, a whole different thing to lose your home. There’s something so intrinsically wrong with that if you ask me.

I think people have learned, to some extent, I mean, look at the increase in child trust funds. People are realising that things ought to change, that we can’t keep doing things the way they’ve been done, just because they’ve been done that way in the past.

Anyway, I’m in a good mood, so off I go, ignoring the super-spammer I’ve got dogging my site at the moment. And always posting in Russian! I’ve got no idea what this fellow is saying!

Oh how depressing a means of advertising

More often that not, ads are either funny, or trying to make you feel like you could be this successful person on the TV too, if you just buy this! Some ads, though, take a more depressing way of trying to get you to buy stuff.

Have a guess which sort of product might market itself that way? Certainly wouldn’t be the normal stuff, food, clothing, tech gadgets, sporting equipment… no, all those things either go with just normal selling it’s good points, or ‘you’d be cool like this guy here if you drank/ate …’ kind of stuff. But there are a few that think they need to use scare tactics to get us to fork out our hard earned cash.

Insurance companies do this all the time. Have you ever gotten pamphlets in the mail for insurance companies? A few weeks back I was looking out for new term assurance and life cover, or at least a life insurance package. I looked into a lot of companies, trying to find the best deal. Some of those companies are rather poor at getting their advertising material out in a timely manner, or seem to just have you on a mailing list once you talk to them.

Basically, these pamphlets show up in your letter box – addressed to you in an envelope – telling you you could die, and don’t leave all the burden of burying you on your family and blah blah blah. I think this sort of advertising is abhorrent, and am thankful I didn’t go with the company who sent me this kind of crappy advertising material. They also talk about some statistics about injury from work, home or car accidents, which I seem to have miraculously avoided – according to these statistics – with the only exception being a case of whiplash earlier in the year. That was from a fairly minor car accident in a car park, so barely counts as a car accident anyway.

I don’t know, I just hate this kind of thing… it’s like trying to guilt you into buying insurance, or trying to make you really fearful about anything happening so you’ll pay up. Bah I say to those companies, bah!

Will I rock out to the Beatles?

Goodness, I don't know if I'll 'rock out' to anything... I'm not the 'rocking out' sort.

Firstly, lets be clear, I’ve not played any of the Rock Band, Guitar Hero, games… at all. Nor any of those ‘Sing Star’ games. I’ve not had a PlayStation in a long while, and I’ve not felt compelled to play these games in spite of generally liking rhythm games. I think it’s being told to like them that puts me off… Does that make me contrary? Maybe…

Anyway, this one is getting some odd reactions. Reviewers are treating it like the bees knees, the cat’s meow, and all sorts of animal related idioms. It’s sitting at 9.0 on IGN, and Metacritic is showing it at 89, but there seems to be some less than stellar fan reviews. Basically, there are two camps regarding this game.

First camp, the major review sites. They say it’s awesome, great song list, visuals are pretty good, sound is pretty good, not a huge challenge of a Rock Band game, though. Second camp, the players. A heck of a lot of players are panning this game due to how easy it is, which leads to it getting boring quickly, and the fact that the amount of songs on the game compared to the amount of songs that you can download if you pay for. If you’ve read much of my blog you’ll know I absolutely detest games being released with downloadable content already available should you pay for it. That’s total BS, in my opinion, and just a very nasty practice being used by game producers.

So, where do I sit in all this? It seems to me that if you like The Beatles and you have a PS3, you’d be a little silly not to get this game at some point. However, if you’re like me, and The Beatles aren’t really your thing, then this probably isn’t the title for you. So, I think I’ll continue along having not played any of the Rock Band games until one comes along that is just too awesome to pass up. This title does not meet this standard for me, but as I said, I think Beatles fans will go mental for it.

Random stuff post

I've got a few topics to cover, but nothing worth an entire post all of it's own...

It’s been really busy in the past few weeks, my SO has still been suffering with that back pain I'd mentioned – and being really strong and soldering on, in spite of what is agony almost every morning for her – so we’ve been getting very little or disjointed sleep. She’s been able to manage about five to six hours most nights, and we’ve taken to napping in the afternoons a lot of the time, too. We know what’s going on, and it’s just a matter of her strengthening her back, at this stage, but apart from that, there’s not much to be done. Hot showers and a back massage seem to help a little, relaxing those muscles. It’s just a pity that she’s better at massages than me.

Work has been hectic, but being able to work from home has been a Godsend with my SO so under the weather. I can make sure that she’s well taken care of, and still get all my work done, no matter what time I’m awake or asleep. I’m really liking this style of working, and no longer having to commute to work has been fantastic! I’ve gotten an hour or two extra in every day!

All my financial interests have largely been put on hold. I’m still keeping an eye on all those investments and offshore financial services, which seem to have some okay rates at the moment, but I think I’ve decided against investing in international real estate. I just don’t want the trouble that could come of it, I mean, invest in Panama real estate, for example… I would hardly ever see the place. Nah, not for me!

Anyway, that’s an odds and ends post there, now hopefully they can be a little better put together!

More impressions of FFXIII

Final Fantasy XIII may not be out for a few more more months, but at least there is some release media to pour through in the mean time.

The storyline is set around the expulsion of a race, called the fal’Cie, by humans, from a floating paradise like city called Cocoon. Originally the fal’Cie created Cocoon for humans, but thirteen centuries later, humans are scared of the fal’Cie, because some of them can become l’Cie, which are people with special destinies, which if they don’t fulfil, become Cie Corpses, which are big scary monsters. The humans are trying to force the fal’Cie to move back to the surface of the planet, called Pulse, which has strange effects on people and the governing body of Cocoon, the Theocratic Sanctum, have a staunch quarantine that anyone who’s been to the surface of Pulse can’t get back into Cocoon.

The story centres around a few characters, which all happen to become l’Cie, even though they didn’t want that to happen, and their fight against the army, called PSICOM, to stop them purging Cocoon of the fal’Cie.

The story line is intriguing, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. There is a demo and a few trailers available to watch here on IGN, which show the game to be just amazing. The most impressive visuals on an RPG yet, in my opinion, and the transition between cut-scene and in-game is startlingly similar.

It’s nice to see the good ol’ Eidolons back, with Odin, Shiva, Ifrit, and Carbuncle, and apparently, not only their respective summoning scenes are amazing, but you can also combine your character with their Eidolon to get some form of… transportation that can do damage during battles. Odin becomes a horse like creature that his summoner, Lightning, can ride, whilst Shiva is actually summoned in the form of two sisters, Nix and Styria, and they turn into a motorcycle that their summoner, Snow, can ride. Carbuncle is summoned by Vanille, and he turns into a disc, and Ifrit, who is summoned by Sazh, turns into a hotrod racing car.

I really can’t wait to get my hands on this game, do yourself a favour and check out those videos on IGN.

Playing .... shall be ....

Yeah, stuck for a new way to say I'm doing another post about Song of Ice and Fire HBO casting choices...

I noticed on George’s blog a few days ago that Cersei Lannister has been cast, and will be played by Lena Headey. Now, obviously they will have to give her golden hair and green contacts, but I think this is a very good casting choice for Cersei, actually. Doesn’t this lady look like she could play an evil calculating so-and-so? I think so, and it’s nice to see that the casting is still going pretty well.

There are clearer pictures of the two Stark girls, too, up on George’s Not A Blog, and they really do fit the parts of Arya and Sansa, if you ask me. I was concerned about these characters, because finding good child actors can be very difficult, one imagines, but George said Arya especially blew the competition out of the water. That sounds like Arya spirit to me. :)

I was watching season six of 24 recently, with Boothe Powers as the President, and I think this actor could fit in so very well in the SoIaF world, he looks and sounds just right. It’s funny, but I couldn’t say exactly which character – have to be ‘bad’ or ruthless one – but I think he’d be a great addition to the show.

Now, just for a little bit of a complain, because it wouldn’t feel right to leave this out… George has been talking about writing more on A Dance with Dragons… about tackling a certain portion of the book, and not getting anywhere with it… Well, and this is a restrained version of what I want to say… What the hell is going on!? I want to write in all capitals right now, but I will refrain… George! Stop spreading your attentions over fifty bloody projects and get this bloody book bloody-well published! You told your fans when you released the last one that Dance was more than half done, which later turned into a third done, which meant this should have taken half to a third of the time of the last one! But no, NO! The last book came out October 2005! The one before that August 2000, so by my estimation of time and what he said, this book should have been out at latest early last year… We are looking to hit 2010 before Dance with Dragons is actually released, and I can’t help but feel this is due in part because of George’s lack of focus.

I know that it’s hard to write a book, to write a short story let alone a novel, but when you’re running off to write graphic novels and other things, it’s going to take even longer. It’s just so annoying. Respect the people who love your work. This is part of the reasons why Malazan makes into my top five favourite series, Erikson gets books written in a fifth of the time, and they are just as epic, larger in scale even, that Song of Ice and Fire, and as interesting in terms of storylines. Too depressing, I will admit, but Westeros has more than it’s fair share of that, too!

You suck, spam blocker

Yeah, that's right, you suck! I use hotmail for all my non-work stuff, because I've done it for a long time, and I'll continue to for a long time. I'm a bit of a fanboy, and I started on Hotmail a long time ago, so that's the way it stays.

I got a comment on my blog from someone who said that they had seen the site on Technorati, so I went over and decided to join up – looks like an awesome site, actually! – and ‘claim’ my blog. All was going well, save having to find a user name took a few tries, until it got to verification time. There was a little message at this point saying if you didn’t get the message, check this FAQ. Over I went, thinking smugly that I was just filling in time, that my email account wasn’t one of those frustrating ones which wouldn’t let this process occur, nooooo, of course not!

I have a Hotmail account that I use for all non-work stuff. The company I work for have a very strict policy about non-work related emails, it’s insane. Anyway, because I’ve had this Hotmail account for about eight, nearly nine, years, I don’t much fancy using anything else. Seems fair enough, right? Anyone notice how the free Hotmail accounts stopped giving you the option to ‘block’ some time ago? Well, I get a heck of a lot of spam and phishing scam emails as a result, and I can deal with that, at least they still go to the Junk box.

But this verification email is just gone, lost, never to be seen in my Inbox, and I’m really annoyed. I wanted to join this site, but now the chances of that seem rather diminished. All I can hope is that some nice person will read this, and post me the email address the verification link comes from, so I can add it in Hotmail as a contact, and then I’ll get the email! So that’s still really annoying, but nice to know people are reading my blog!

Saving in an ISA account

Many of us Brits have one of these little babies, but do we have the best one? I'm not sure about mine, so off I'm going to find out.

Lately I’ve mentioned that my SO is experiencing back pain, which means that she cannot sleep much longer each night than six or so hours. Sometimes this is more like four, and very rarely it’s been seven. I naturally like to sleep about eight hours a night, but can manage on a lot less. I don’t like sending my SO off to fend for herself with backpain, so each morning I get up with her, and do what I can. This means that for the last three weeks or so I’ve been getting not enough sleep each and every night.

Now, I’ve been unhappy with my cash ISA savings account for some time now, and I want to get that sorted out ASAP. But it’s difficult to concentrate on banking figures and bonuses and extras when your brain capacity is that of a person who’s mildly intoxicated. Also, please don’t confuse the ISA with ISA savings funds, the two are wildly different, and it’s just an odd coincidence that the acronyms are the same. An ISA account allows you to take a certain portion of your tax and put it into a savings account. You don’t get the money if you don’t have one of these accounts, that’s the way it is, so if you don’t have a specific ISA account to place to put it, each year you’re just throwing away thousands of pounds. You can alsoinvest your ISA into fixed rates bonds, but I prefer the cash investments for these.

There are many services out there to help you find the best ISA, and that can make a huge difference. The internet is really a fantastic resource in banking, because there are so many unaffiliated sites, you get the real deal, so to speak. They aren’t – the honestly unaffiliated ones, anyway – trying to push one particular bank or account on you.

I’ve been thinking about one with Manchester, because at the moment there’s is the highest for interest rates, but still I’m not sure. These things need to be looked through thoroughly, not just a superficial inspection.

Don't like it

Penny Arcade's new art style and site set up, that is.

If you go right back to the start of Penny Arcade, you can see how far Gabe's come in his art. The characters look a lot better, smoother, just... more professional. This new art style seems to harken back overly to the original Penny Arcade, and it makes Gabe's work look less good for it. I don't know what the heck is going on over there, and I haven't seen any mention of it on the forums over there, but it just looks a bit cheaper, a bit nasty.

The whole site has a new style, too. The menu buttons have all be squished over to the sides, which means any time you want to use them, you spend the first second searching for them. Bad design, very bad design. Even the fonts are ugly... what are they thinking?

Looking back over comics from earlier this year, I'd have to say the colour pallet is slightly different, the backgrounds are tending to be less detailed, and the characters themselves seem to have thinner outline lines, and I'd say that a major difference is the eyes. They seem to be just slightly different, leading to the characters looking a little... stupid... I don't want to say that, but that's the affect.

Of course, these are all very slightly noticeable, two degrees less saturation on colours will be hard to specifically notice, yet has an impact... I'm being picky I suppose because I really like the comic, it's the only web comic I keep up with. It's frustrating to see their site and their comic go downhill. I'm hoping that the comics are just the intervening ones whilst they are at PAX, and that they are the reserves that were done some time ago.

On a side note, I'd like to say congratulations to Tycho on his second bundle of very cute joy, Ronia Quinn.

Pains from gaming

All gamers have them, or nearly all. The young ones mightn't, but just wait a few years and they will.

I spend a lot of time gaming on the PC and the PS3 Slim, at the moment, and whilst the PS3 is fine for me, the PC does give me some pains. First off, my wrists hurt like heck, after a while. I've got wrist guards to help with this - which my SO fondly refers to as 'Gamer Gauntlets', she has some too - but you can't really take all the pain away from RSI injuries, because in most cases you don't stop doing the behaviour which caused it in the first place.

Then there's the inevitable back pain from sitting in the same chair, usually your posture isn't fantastic, and you aren't getting up often enough to stretch. Anyone who's experienced prolonged back pain will know that it takes a lot of energy from you, it's really draining. Having sore wrists and a sore back makes you very uninclined to do a lot of things, too,  except maybe to lie down or have a hot bath.

Now, with the PS3, as I said, it doesn't bother me. However, since we got it, and my SO has been playing it, she has said that her finger tips - especially her thumbs - get sore, along with her wrists and hands. She has to stop and massage them quite regularly, same with me and my wrists whilst I'm playing PC games. I find this amazing, that the PS3 can give me no issue, but she is still caused pain by it. She's a uni student, so has to spend a lot of time on the computer, and she's also stated that this leads to the same feelings of sore wrists - she's essay writing, not gaming, though - along with sore elbows and knees from her chair and a sore back. She's short, so she often gets extra pains because the world is sized for a slightly taller woman.

But we both wouldn't give it up, even with all the pains, I don't know if that makes us more or less geeky, though...

Now there's no need for that!

Just a little bit back I happened to be viewing a new entry in a blog I find funny, and noticed a blog entry title in someone's comment so took a look at it because it seemed interesting. The post was really very surprising in it's level of outrageous hostility.

I couldn’t believe this woman’s anger at the news story she was writing about. It was mind boggling, shocking, disquieting, and kind of disgusting. I was looking over the comments, seeing all of them agree with her rant, and then there was one comment, a really, really, huge comment, that actually said everything I had wanted to say. I’m going to quote that comment here, purely because I think they’re right, that comment will be removed pretty much as soon as the blogger sees an actual coherent argument that doesn’t agree with them. But I wanted to add my own feelings to the issue.

I know this is just a blog, and that this is just one person’s opinion, but I find it disturbing that someone could be so uncaring about another human being. The kid sprayed some graffiti on some buildings, and he’s going to prison for six months for it, but she thinks this isn’t enough. He’s not just ‘tagging’ these buildings, either, he’s an actual artist, and this ‘lady’ has a dig at him for that, as well. What’s wrong with people? She accuses this kid of being a sociopath, but she’s the one exhibiting more antisocial behaviour. Bah, I just don’t get it. Please read the link above with her rant in it, and then read the comment I’ve quoted below if it isn’t still on the blog in question.

E-Fairy Said:

Wow, your level of rage seems wildly disproportionate to what this young person actually did. I don’t believe the article was at all trying to excuse this young man, in fact, it seemed surprisingly fact based and non-emotive, especially after what you had said about it. Why are you so outraged that he didn’t answer a question due to discomfort? Tell me, isn’t there anything you don’t do because you would find it uncomfortable or distasteful? Does this young person not have that right also?

You call him a “psychopath” a term not even used any more by clinical psychologists or psychiatrists. A term that, essentially, means sociopath, though that it also outdated, and has been replaced by antisocial personality disorder. Do you know what that actually means? Your suggesting this young man has no conscience, no understanding of right and wrong, and no empathy. I think that is a bit far fetched, now isn’t it?

As for monsters are created, not born, I believe you’ll actually find that nearly all who would fit under the definition of ‘monster’ already had a predilection for psychological issues, and some of the worst known serial killers, suffers of antisocial personality disorder, were actually raised in strict yet loving homes. So that blows your theory, or should I say that part of your rant, completely out of the water.

You also claim to know what this young man has faced in his life, in spite of not knowing him personally, nor ever even having any contact with him. You resort to name calling, a very childish method of communication indeed.

To top it off, you suggest that your legal system is not harsh enough with sentencing young people, when it has been proven for all the world to see that your country has one of the worst criminal justice systems in terms of rehabilitation and repeat offences. Your prisons hold one in every 31 adults, that’s 7.3 million citizens. It is well documented that your country has the highest rate of incarceration per capita compared to anywhere in the world. And, property crime – as in graffiti – has been on a steady decline since the 1990’s, so maybe you should start to consider that those in control of that particular part of the judicial system, actually know what they are doing, no?

And for goodness sake, if a person has had an exhibition of their artwork, then they’re an artist, whether you like it or not.

I’m under no illusion that this comment will probably not be published on your site, or if it is, it won’t be for very long, but I find your level of intolerance and injustice to be rather disgusting. I’m hoping your own children, should you have any, don’t try to make themselves too comfortable, or expect you to support them through a difficult time should they make a mistake, or really, rely on you in any way for a moral compass.

You tell ‘em!

Games that are just so bad

I've written before of how I occasionally like to look up the games on IGN that received the worst reviews, well I've been at it again and here are two DS games that both scored 1.0.

First up we have not only Elf Bowling 1, but Elf Bowling 1 & 2! The premise behind this ‘game’ is that you are Santa, and you hate elves, so in the first game you’ve got them set up as ‘Pins’ and you ‘Bowl’ at them. See all those loaded words there? That’s because the sprites look so bad, that calling this a game is really being too generous. All you do is tap once, that’s it. You can’t aim, apparently, or do anything, really. You just have to tap the screen. And that’s just the first title, wait, there’s more! The second title is supposedly worse than the first! In this one, hateful Santa and his elves are in ‘Paradise’ and Santa’s now using the elves to play shuffle-board with. According to the review, there’s no animation of the elves, they just sort of bump about. This game originally made the rounds on the web as a free flash-game. Somehow it was made into a DS title that you’re supposed to actually pay for!? Apparently there are songs in there, too. “Elf, Elf, Baby” and “Who let the Elves out”… I shudder at the thought. Ahh, how funny! Looking at some of the 'game play', this is by far the worst looking DS game I’ve ever seen.

Second abysmal game is simply called Aquarium. Now, the cover art actually looks kind of intriguing, in a DS game sort of way. When you look at the clean, nice cover, you think this must be an interesting, though perhaps short lived, game, but you’d be so very, very wrong. Aquarium is a, well hang on, is meant – sort of – to be a game where you put fish in a tank and feed them some stuff that they don’t actually eat, just swim back and forth and the food disappears, and you’re supposed to find this relaxing. There are unlockables, though it’s not explained what unlocks them – probably just sitting through more of this horrible little game – and you can ‘decorate’ the tank with scenery and what not, that apparently looks hideous. Wow, this is so bad it may have passed funny and gone right to “Why?” Here are some images if you would like to subject yourself to the funniness, because the screens to attain that level of so bad it’s bloody hilarious.

On the misfortune of others

There are people who always make a profit off of the mistune of others, and I've noticed this in companies offering to buy people's home and offer them cash now, whilst they rent back their houses from the companies.

With the housing market not only taking a nose dive, but them trying to dig through the earth, people got very concerned about what would happen to them as a result. Most of us have felt some differences, even if it’s just noticing how much produce has gone up at markets. I think because this financial crisis started with houses, it’s been the housing markets and current mortgage rates that people have paid the most avid attention, and that’s understandable.

What bothers me though, is the scaremongering going on from those who benefit from those sell for cash quickly or those home buyer type schemes. These companies are all over the place now, if you Google them you will find a smorgasbord of options, and most of them here in the UK. I feel like the common Brit really needs to arm themselves with better information about mortgage news, because these companies are doing this because they are making a rather substantial profit from it, not to help people.

I know these companies aren’t evil, I’m not saying that, what I am saying is that these schemes are so very close to how this whole mess started in the first place, that it’s a little baffling how it’s happening this way now. I’m hoping to see a stronger upswing in the housing market, and hoping to see these companies slowly but surely move onto less exploitative endeavours!

Lacking Social Skills

How often is it that we meet people who lack all known social skills? I seem to have that happen a fair bit.

For instance, the other night I was taking a cab home, and because I was alone, the cabbie, who seemed a nice enough sort, was rather intent on telling me his life story. Now, normally I don’t mind a bit of talking with the cabbies, it’s a good way to learn the latest news; they always seem to be listening to news on radio stations. So when he first started talking, I put down my book and didn’t try to curb the conversation with non-committal responses. This is what I usually do when I’m not in the mood to talk, or the cabbie has said something rude.

Now, this time, though, I thought the conversation would be of inconsequential things, current events, weather, sports results, that sort of thing. However, no, he starts telling me about how he’s working too much, that he’s not getting enough time with his kids, that he’s just asked for a few days off, that his back is troubling him, and so on. I really felt for the guy, all that sounded pretty damn crappy, but his conversation was very one-sided. There wasn’t really much one could say to him, that would be more than ‘that’s a bad situation’ and ‘I feel your pain’ and ‘that’s too bad’. I wanted to say more, but you can’t really because you don’t really know this person. I resorted to asking prompting questions to give the guy a chance to talk about it more.

It seemed like the right thing to do, to give the guy a chance to talk. He seemed to expect to be shut down, so I thought he deserved a chance to be listened to. We all need to complain sometimes, and I think most of us need someone to listen to us when we do it. So that was my good deed for the day, even if it was uncomfortable at the time. Now it’s kind of funny, because the guy really did talk about everything in about ten minutes.

Time to relax

Thank goodness, because this week has felt really long and tiring.

After what feels like months of waiting, a few weeks back the last pieces of my bathroom were put into place. Now, finally, I’ve got a chance to actually enjoy it, because I’m not quite as busy, and that funny smell of newly installed stuff is gone. I hate that smell, that sort of silicone, paint, glue, stuff smell. I’m really happy with how everything turned out, the new bathroom furniture is nice, and not degraded by poor ventilation like our old stuff. We used to have issues with the exhaust fan not working properly, which lead to peeling paint, bowed walls, and cracked tiles thanks to the bowed walls. So after we decided to re-tile everything, and repaint the ceiling, we had one of those natural exhaust systems installed. I found out about it on one of those ethical home websites, when I was looking for a better solution to the one we’d had in there previously.

We ended up buying all our new stuff for the bathroom separately, because even though those bathroom suites packages are cheaper, there aren't many options. We also know that this is going to be our home for a very long time, we have no intention of selling it ever. I’ve noticed many houses going on the market of late, and it does make you realise just how tempting the idea of cash for home sales must be to many home owners. I just hope that those people realise before it’s too late what a bad option that really is for them.

So this afternoon I’m going to take a nice bath, and read for a while. Of course, that’s if I can tear myself away from the PS3 for long enough. Weekends are great for gaming, especially if you have managed to clear every other obligation away, so you just have time for you and your SO to kick back and play Soulcalibur for hours!

Reviewing Soulcalibur 4 - Part 2

And now for part 2...

Other game mechanics that I think really add to this game is the chance to level up playing styles. I'll get to why it's styles your levelling, rather than characters, in just a second. There are many single player modes, which is nice, making it a game that you really don't have to play online to get the best benefit from. If leader boards are your thing, though, then you will have to play online to be a part of them, obviously. You will unlock achievements as you go through, though in this particular game they are referred to as 'Honours'

Now, for what really sets this title apart as an amazing contribution to this series is the character creation. Not only can you go and give the standard characters better weapons, as you used to be able to in previous titles, but you can go in and make a character from scratch. You can choose male or female, and then any of the weapon styles for your new character. That's why levelling a style in this game, rather than a specific character, even though the styles are referred to by the original character who use them. You can unlock many different costume items, weapons, and armour by going through the game. Some you need to pay for, using the gold you earn by playing in the single player modes. It's a nice system, and it adds so much depth to the game.

From the point of view of my SO, who loves the games but gets aggravated at the costumes or physiques many of the female characters are subjected to, she loves this customisability. She's made a female samurai based on Mitsurugi, who is actually dressed like a samurai, and is really pleased to be able to play as a variety of female characters, not just those with little on.

I'm really enjoying the ability to create characters that don't look silly, as many unfortunately do. They are all part of the game, and that's fine, but it's nice to have more control over the characters you most like to play as. There are even some characters included in the game that were made by manga artists, so this is obviously a very key feature of the game.

There are a few oddballs in the game, being Darth Vader and The Apprentice, and Yoda is available on the 360 version, and for download for a small fee from the PlayStation Network. I still want to talk more about this game, but I can see this post is becoming rather huge, so I'll leave it at that.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the game, and I really didn't expect to be playing this more than the other three, but I'm finding that it's taking up most of my game time at the moment. I'm awarding the game a 9.2 in score, it's really a great game that every fighting game fan should have!

I'm looking forward to getting into the other games some more to bring you more reviews.

Reviewing Soulcalibur 4 - Part 1

My first review of my current PS3 game stash is going to be, naturally enough, for the game I've played the most so far... Soulcalibur 4.

I've played the previous two version of this game, Soulcalibur II on the Dreamcast - right before Sega gave up on creating consoles - and Soulcalibur III on the XBOX, so I was already familiar with many of the game mechanics and characters. SCIV has a few new characters, most of which use weapon styles that veteran players will already be familiar with. The graphics are nice and clear, with good interfaces and character models. The backgrounds are nice in most cases, but the voicing at the beginning of each battle is inane to the point of irritation or hilarity, depending on your mood.

The fighting is very responsive, with no control lag to speak of. Some of the characters moves remain the same from previous games, though some moves are achieved with distinctly different button and direction combinations. Some of the new game mechanics really add a nice touch to the game, such as armour destruction and the Soul Gauge Critical Finish manoeuvre. The Soul Gauge can be found at the end of your character's health bar, and is a small coloured gem type thing. It starts green, but if you are blocking all your opponent's attacks without landing any hits yourself - blocked or not - then this gem will slowly turn yellow and then red. Once it's flashing red, the opponent has a chance to do a Critical Finish, which is an instant kill move, but it only works if your opponent has also broken a piece of your armour, or broken through your defence, which is when they hit your weapon a whole lot and there's a metallic breaking sound followed by your guard being down in spite of you still holding the correct button. To do this move you have to hit all four face buttons at the same time, or simply L1.

Now, there is too much more to put in just this post, so I've decided to spread the review over two. Not sure if that will happen with all my reviews, but it will with this one.

Technology for the win

I just love being connected to the world without having to be in it, and it is through technology that I get that, so... technology for the win!

For instance, I was just offered a free trial of a new phone system, because I work from home and have a very awesome broadband connection. I hear of so many people still using ADSL or some even using dial up!? But today I’m really aware just how much I use my net connection, for regular news, or tech news, which is cool, because it’s often not covered on normal sites in much detail. Try this site here for broadband and tech news. I hate using the phone, so email is essential for me, and of course I have to have a great connection for gaming, not to mention for actual work, too. Though I’m not working today, oh no, today I’m catching up on blogging!

I’ve been having trouble with my blog all week. It took me four days to figure out that one of my blogging program files were corrupted, and then I had to completely reload the software onto my PC! I kept up my blogging, I just wasn’t posting them, so don’t be surprised to see a week’s worth of blog posts go up today!

It was very nice to be able to get my blog back up and running, especially because I’ve been so busy with work that I really didn’t have time to do much in the way of figuring out what was actually wrong. It’s always like that, though, you’ve never got much time to fix things, which is probably why my methods are precise… I’ve had time to think about exactly the best way to troubleshoot, and fix the issue before I waste a lot of time on it.

Anyway, enough of that. I was looking at the PlayStation Network, and for those who want to use the online multiplayer function, you pretty much have to have some form of headset or the like. The nifty thing with the PS3 is that it can be a Bluetooth one, which is pretty cool… then I thought about actually playing with other people, and having to listen to them, and I shook myself out of my silliness.

First 24 hours of the PS3 Slim...

... have been excellent, so I'm going to write about it here today.

As a side note, look out in my upcoming entries for reviews of the four games I purchased with the console. SoulCalibur IV, InFamous, GTA IV, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Now, onto the actual impressions of the machine so far. I’ve not had a PS3 in the past, so the console as a whole is a brand new experience, let alone the updated version. I found it to be surprisingly heavy when I was carting it back to my car from the store, which was a pleasant surprise. I don’t like when consoles are very light, it seems cheap. You’ll find that both the other ‘Generation 7′ consoles also have a weightiness to them that is really very pleasing to hold.

In keeping with the Wii, the PS3 uses no disc tray, rather you slide the disc into a slot where I believe there is a small monster on the inside of the console who takes the disc and places it where it needs to be… 8O I don’t really mean that… or do I?

The console is auto set to be used with AV cables, rather than a HDMI cable. You also have to purchase the HDMI cable separately, along with controllers – only one comes in the box – and the remote and any other devices. When you load up the console originally, if you are using the HDMI cables you have to hold the power button until you’ve heard it beep twice, then it will pick up the HDMI input and you can adjust your resolution to be the same as your television. The fact that you have to pay for HDMI cables separately is my only complaint with this console.

It’s a nice looking gaming machine, in my opinion, and I think the matte looks better than the original glossy finish. If it’s fingerprint resistant, then it seems somewhat more… professional, to me anyway. It’s quiet, and I like the system interface, too. So that’s all from my first day of playing the PS3 Slim, in the following days, maybe weeks depending on how much I play any one game, I’ll be reviewing those four games, too.

This should be more simple

It really should, it used to be, but now it isn't...

For a start, why is it so frustratingly fiddly to get HDTV at the moment? Is it just my system, my set top box, or are other people finding their signal isn’t consistent? It’s HDTV, it’s supposed to be stable, strong, consistent, dammit! My better judgement is telling me that it is something to do with my set-top box, and I really don’t want it to be, but the local technology forums don't say anything about it

It’s so frustrating when things don’t work the way they are supposed to… It reminds me of when I was a teenager, around 17 I think, I was still living with my parents, and they’d taken me into the city – an hours drive from their home – to pick up a PlayStation game. It was one of those ones that came on multiple discs, it was Final Fantasy VIII. When I got up to disc two, I found that they had sold me a scratched disc. This was frustrating enough, but after a phone call to the store where I had bought it, I was somewhat relieved to know they would swap it for another disc with no trouble, I just had to get my parents to drive me into the city again.

Okay so they did, and we picked up the disc, and came home. This was a two hour journey, mind you. So I put the disc in the PlayStation… same issue… not just the same issue, it was the same disc! They had given me the same disc back by mistake… so then I had to convince my parents to make the two hour drive into the city again, purely for my benefit. Thankfully they complied the next day, with little attitude towards me, which was nice.

Third time turned out to be the charm, and finally I had a working copy of Final Fantasy VIII. Anyway, what’s going on with my set-top box reminds me of that.

Season 6 of 24

One of the best shows on television, if you ask me!

I’ve seen all the seasons so far, and I’m watching season six for the first time now. It’s been a very good series, in my opinion, with more than enough to keep me enticed into buying more seasons, though some tropes of the show do become a little frustrating after a while.

For instance, the fact that there always has to be another one behind the scenes, pulling all the strings, and then we find out that guy is just a dupe for another guy who’s really pulling all the strings. I think this would work just fine whilst it was on television, and you only got one episode a week, but when you watch them back to back over the span of about a week, those tropes don’t work so well.

Nonetheless, the show is awesome. Jack Bauer is one of the best protagonists on TV, hands down my favourite character in any show that’s currently airing. It is so refreshing to me to see someone who is willing to push, to go the whole hog for their morality, who has a morality which they abide by, even if it isn’t great for them or doesn’t quite fit inside the law.

Season six is shaping up alright, Jack’s dad being one of the major bad guys is… interesting. I liked that Chloe is being more humanised in the show, too. I’m about half way though the season at this stage, Jack’s just called the previous president, the little crazy megalomaniac Charles Logan. That guy is so creepy, in my opinion, and not just because of his willingness to kill his citizens to gain access to more oil, but the way the guy moves. That little cocking of the head up and to the side… he looks very… wrong. I’ve no other way to put it, he gives off ‘wrong’ very strongly.
